Milan's Culture

Milan is a global city located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Famous for its financial and business center, it is the richest city in Italy. It stands as the industrial capital of the nation and the fashion capital of the world. Greater Milan now boasts a population of over 7 million (roughly twice the size of greater Rome).

The Milanese are hardworking, often putting in long hours. On weekends however, they love to relax often late into the night. They tend to be intelligent, good humored and friendly. In group settings, they talk loudly and over the top of each other. They place a high value on clothing. Walking the streets of Milan, you might think that you accidentally stepped into a fashion show.

Centuries of corruption, both in the church and in the government, have led to a general sense of distrust and skepticism. The law makers (politicians) are in continous opposition against the law enforcers (judges and magistrates).

Adorned on top by a gold statue of Mary that was symbolically the highest point in Milan for hundreds of years, the central cathedral downtown Milan is virtually empty. Even more saddening is the fact that this cathedral is among one of the largest in the world.

Americans who visit Milan for the first time are often struck by the following cultural differences:

  • The crazy drivers (by US standards!)
  • You will often get pushed and shoved when waiting in line. The concept of personal space isn't the same.
  • Rules are often ignored.
  • Eating with an Italian will take a long time!
  • Italians drink "cafe espresso" all the time!
